Halloween is just around the corner, and it’s time to start Halloween decorating your home! There are many aspects of your home to decorate, like the interior as well as the exterior. Some people take Halloween decorating to the next level and place some of the decorations on the roof of their homes, for the whole block to see. If you are one of these people, it’s important to follow these 7 roof safety tips to ensure there aren’t any unplanned scares.
Use a Sturdy Ladder
Although we don’t recommend that you climb onto your own roof for safety reasons, it might seem worth it to you when it comes to decorations. If that’s the case, make sure you use a sturdy ladder and wear slip-resistant footwear. Place your ladder one foot away for every four feet of the ladder’s height. Also, make sure the ladder is extended 3 feet beyond the edge of the roof.
Check for Roof Damage
Before you start decorating your roof, make sure there isn’t any roof damage. This can appear as broken or discolored shingles. These areas can be weak due to water leaks or storm damage. If you notice any signs, avoid placing decorations on there and get in touch with roof professionals immediately.
Protect Your Gutters
Halloween decorating is a lot of fun, but you don’t want to jeopardize your roof or gutters. Don’t place anything heavy on top of your gutters. Lightweight decorations and or string lights are fine, but skip out on anything that is heavy. If your gutters stop working properly, that can turn into a horror story you didn’t ask for.
Protect Your Roof Shingles
We highly discourage you from hanging Halloween decorations from your shingles. Instead, hang lightweight ones from your fascia board or gutters. Try to avoid using nails and staples when possible. Nailing decorations to your shingles can let moisture in and cause roof damage.
Prepare Lights and Extension Cords Before Installing
Don’t get too ahead of yourself! Before you get on top of your roof, untangle the lights and extension cords. You want to spend as little time on your roof as possible. Make sure everything works before you get started. This will save you time and keep you from getting distracted when you are on top of your roof.
Ask for Help
If you don’t think you can decorate on your own, don’t be afraid to ask your family or neighbors for help! Some decorations require teamwork to install, so don’t take up this job on your own. Let’s prevent a nightmare and stay safe!
